“To the pure, all things are pure”
Me: “Discombobulated shock” Because HOW ???
The movie “Power Couple”, written by Precious and Adesoji Adewara and directed by John Oguntuase, was released on June 30, 2024, on Precious, The Beloved Media Channel on YouTube.
Power Couple highlights many lessons for Believers, from choosing the right partner with God to the dangers of keeping sins secret, the undeserving mercy of God, the necessity of Mentorship and Accountability, and more.
Let's dive in
.
“Topee, you're bursting my brain”
…Little did she know.
The movie starts in the present with a newly married couple: Pastor Tope and Naomi Williams. Both are Firebrand ministers of God and well-known personalities in the Church community, both online and offline.
On their wedding day, I'm sure social media was buzzing with comments and tags of #KingdomMarriage. Their union was a match specially curated by God… or not?
We are taken back to a few years prior to witness the events that preceded the relationship and ultimately, the union.
Sister Naomi turns down a marriage proposal with a simple yet powerful question: “Is it bad to want more?”, ministry is being weighed on the scale of Facebook friends and several IG followers, and guest ministers are being invited, not by the leading of the Holy Ghost but on the clamor of followers and whether or not they deserve their request.
Amid all this, we see Naomi’s best friend, Debbie, spiral into an unhealthy obsession with a well-known, powerful, and undeniably attractive Minister, who also happens to be Naomi’s suitor and, eventually, her fiancé.
What unfolds is a tangled web of jealousy, envy, and crippling self-esteem issues. But it goes even deeper. Debbie, in a desperate bid for love, becomes that woman one who believes, “If I can’t have him, no one else can.”
She doesn’t just seethe in silent resentment; she makes serious suicide threats. We also witness a sudden shift in character an adamant insistence giving way to tender pleas. This raises the pressing question: Why? What triggered this unexpected change of heart?
In the following scenes, we make a shocking discovery. Pastor T has weaknesses too. But the truly unsettling part? He twists scripture to justify his errors. Things spiral out of control, going from 1000 to zero in the blink of an eye. The situation becomes so dire that, in the end, two people get shot.
Power Couple is centered around the themes of Love and Forgiveness, Trauma, Sin and Healing, Betrayal, Jealousy and Envy, Recovery, and ultimately, the Love and Mercy of God.
A Few Lessons from the Movie:
"I like him/her, but they don’t like me back" It makes me feel unworthy and unseen.
No, you are not unworthy. Their lack of romantic feelings for you does not define your value. It has no bearing on your identity. You are God’s child, deeply loved and intentionally created. Christ embraced death on the cross for you. His love is reckless, unwavering, and everlasting. If God freely gave His Son for you, why would a relationship determine your worth? A partner is a blessing, but never the measure of your significance.
What is a Kingdom Marriage? Slightly different from the popular definition, or rather, more encompassing, a Kingdom Marriage is the union of two believers who are wholeheartedly committed to Christ and His purpose.
Fame, titles, or positions don’t define it. Whether they are music ministers, pastors, or simply devoted followers of Christ, as long as they are God’s children walking in alignment with His will, their union is a Kingdom Marriage and yes, that makes them a power couple. And the Church will say...?
"He’s a great guy, but is it bad to want more?" No, it’s not bad to want more. It’s not wrong to desire specific qualities in a partner. The real danger isn’t in wanting more, it’s in choosing without God. It’s in making one of the most important decisions of your life without His guidance.
The danger also lies in failing to prioritize what truly matters, in not asking the right questions, and in neglecting basic due diligence. Want more but want wisely.
Sin and Secrecy are best friends. Sin thrives in secrecy. Outside it, it loses its potency and is easier to overcome.
The enemy knows this, and that's why he strives for sin to remain secret. It’s easy to say, “Christ loves me as I am.” Well, He does, but he hates that sin. One of the evidence of the workings of the Holy Ghost in you is that you become more like Christ, walking in the Spirit and not yielding to the flesh.
Whether the sin is trauma-induced or not, sexual sin or otherwise, your first step to liberation is to speak up. Talk to the right people, get help and accountability. The shame you’re so scared of will pass away, but you’re freedom is yours to keep. Will people have a thing or two to say? Yes, but why base the state of your soul on people’s fickle emotions? Is the venom of a snake a joke to you?
Forgiveness can be tough, but in the end, unforgiveness is a sin and love still keeps no record of wrong.
When it comes to cinematic elements, the acting was commendable the characters fully embodied their roles, making their performances both believable and compelling.
The visuals were well-executed, with seamless editing and a pacing that kept the story engaging from start to finish. The sound design and effects were top-notch, enhancing the overall viewing experience. The production team did an excellent job.
In all, Power Couple is a great watch and a must-see for every believer.
This movie is definitely one to watch and it comes highly recommended.
